Bach Toccata & Fugue in D minor Reference: GMCL165x A magnificent orchestration by Peter Lawson of what is probably Bach´s best-known work for organ which he wrote sometime between 1703 and 1707. A different orchestral transcription (made in the 1920s byLeopold Stokowski) was used in the 1940 Disney film "Fantasia". Ravel Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte Reference: GMCL161x The "Pavane for a Dead Princess" was composed for solo piano by Maurice Ravel in 1899 when he was studying at the Conservatoirede Paris under Gabriel Faure. He also did an orchestral version which appeared in 1910. This edition is as the original Ravel orchestration, save for the fact that he wrote for horns in G which appear in F in this edition. Mahler Landler from Symphony No 2 Reference: GMCL158x Mahler´s symphonies tend to be scored for a large orchestra, putting this wonderful music out of reach of many smaller orchestras. This arrangement whilst not simplifying the music attempts to remedy this by reducing the orchestral requirements. This movement is from the huge "Resurrection" Symphony which in the original scoring required 4 flutes and piccolos, 4 oboes, 5 clarinets, 4 bassoons, 6 horns, 6 trumpets, 4 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, 2 harps, organ, soprano and alto soloists, full choir and strings as well as an additional "band" of 2 horns, 4 trumpets and timpani; though this movement utilised only a part of the full force. This LANDLER stands alone quite happily and offers a good entry to the symphonic world of Gustav Mahler. Mahler Scherzo from Symphony No.1 Reference: GMCL155x Mahler´s symphonies tend to be scored for a large orchestra putting this wonderful music out of reach of many smaller orchestras. Carr Air for Strings Reference: GMCO080x The AIR FOR STRINGS was composed in Mallorca in October 2006. It is a heartfelt love song in the form of a long arching lament built around a simple and passionate theme woven through the strings. First stated on violas and interspersed with bridge passages, the theme passes through to violins and a solo cello before finally arriving at a climactic statement about half way through. The music then subsides leaving the theme exposed in a more relaxed setting before arriving at its conclusion in quiet, calm suspension. 		Dukas The Sorcerer's Apprentice Reference: GMCL154x Paul Dukas wrote his symphonic poem "The Sorcerer´s Apprentice" in 1897. The story tells of an old sorcerer who goes out leaving his apprentice with chores to perform in his workshop. The apprentice gets tired of fetching water and casts a spell on a broomstick to do the work for him, using magic he has not yet fully learned. Soon, however, the workshop is awash with water, as he realises that he cannot stop the broom because he does not know the magic word to make it stop. He tries to destroy the the broom with an axe, but each piece of the broom becomes a whole new one, and each continues fetching water, now faster than ever. When all is apparently doomed in a massive flood, the sorcerer returns, breaks the spell and saves the day. 		Gibbs Threnody for Walter de la Mare Reference: GMCO069x The manuscript of this work is dated 17 July 1956 and closely follows Walter de la Mare´s death in June of the same year. It has been described as one of Gibbs´ most deeply felt compositions and is scored- like Vaughan Williams´ Tallis Fantasia and Elgar´s Introduction and Allegro - for solo string quartet and string orchestra. 		Carwithen Bishop Rock Overture Reference: GMCO076x The Bishop Rock is the westernmost point of England on the edge of the Isles of Scilly, about 30 miles off Land´s End. The lighthouse there is the last sight the seafarer has of land; to the traveller from the New World, it is a symbol of welcome after the bleak waters of the Atlantic. 		Elgar Sospiri Op70 Reference: GMCL150x 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets in Bb, 2 Bassoons 2 Horns in F, 2 Trumpets in Bb, 3 Trombones, Tuba, Harp Strings (Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Double Bass) Sospiri ("sighs") was originally scored for strings, harp (or piano) and, rather peculiarly, harmonium (or organ). The latter instrument only served to muddy, rather than complement, the texture of the strings and restrict the number of performances and popularity of this neglected masterpiece. It is with this in mind that this new orchestration, replacing the harmonium with woodwind and brass, seeks to bring the work to a wider audience.
